blueshirt bulletin: waiting for the final call

blueshirt bulletin: waiting for the final call blueshirt bulletin « still a possibility to pick up peca [updated] | main | jags weighs in on peca; beezer breezes into u.s. hall » august 15, 2007 waiting for the final call michael peca has gone home after completing his physical examination (as first reported by blueshirt bulletin reader brian in our comments section) and talking with ranger management, according to john dellapina of the daily news and blueshirts blog. he must now wait for glen sather to decide whether to tender him a contract offer for this season. the post also has an update on his situation, as does (in case you missed it yesterday) newsday. mitch beck believes, as he writes in his guest column at hockey rodent, that the rangers will take a stab at peca because they really have only this coming season to make a run for the cup -- given their salary cap position for this season and next, mitch says, they will make a run with the vets this year and turn to the young players they have been developing the following year. in other news, darius kasparaitis and artem anisimov are working out in switzerland, preparing for the coming season with one of the swiss league teams. sidearm delivery has all the links, including a video of kasparaitis on the ice. in the czech republic, team jagr lost an exhibition game in a shootout after jaromir jagr came off the bench in the last minute in place of the goalie to score the tying goal. he added two assists in the game, in which petr prucha and david kveton also played, along with other nhl players on both sides. "we played for the people in the first place," said jagr, according to datel's translation of a hokej.cz report. "there were plenty of them, which is good, and i hope they liked it. but then of course, we didn't want to lose. the home side had a strong team, talented guys who play in the nhl. we had to fuel up at the end so we didn't lose. you think you have enough time but suddenly, it's almost over. the home team fought well -- nowadays everyone knows how to play hockey and if you give them a little space, they score on you." posted by dubi on august 15, 2007 at 10:27 am | permalink comments kasparaitis looks pretty good in the video, skating a lot more crisply than i remember him from last year in hartford-- i guess all the reports of him losing a lot of excess weight were on the money. posted by: brushback | august 15, 2007 at 10:58 am if kaspar comes in, mara goes out! posted by: rangerbill94 | august 15, 2007 at 11:03 am he cut his hair off too. posted by: imitation | august 15, 2007 at 11:04 am isles signed vasicek. posted by: pghas | august 15, 2007 at 11:12 am why is the ranger cap situation so bad for next year? shani's $2.5 will be gone, straka's $2.5 will gone, malik's $3 will be gone, mara's $3 will be gone and those guys will be replced by younger cheaper guys like cheraponov, stall, sauer and saginetti. yes the rangers have to do contracts for rosi, henrick and avery but maybe we have to spend $4,000,000 over their current cap number. that might leave enough cap space to pursue the other hossa. posted by: stuart borne | august 15, 2007 at 11:50 am ahem. please stand by and if necessary, avert your eyes, as t_bird is ready to eat some crow (sounds cannibalistic in a way) after calling brian a liar (such an ugly word) the other day. whether or not peca is signed, the facts appear essentially correct as reported by brian, and after piddling all over his post, i now regret my outburst and offer a complete and utter retraction. the imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and i deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and i hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future. posted by: t_bird | august 15, 2007 at 11:55 am somethinng to think about...if peca comes in, then during the season the rangers should find a way give dubinsky and anisimov and/or others some real minutes in place of betts...maybe move betts after they have had a chance to prove themselves... i know that that is easier said than done, but gotta give kids a chance in lieu of a players who has shown no ability to score or hit with verve...decent pk and faceoff guy is not enough for a player of his age... posted by: smitty | august 15, 2007 at 11:57 am stuart- i believe shanahan's cap hit will be 2.5 next year whether he plays or not. his salary is 2.5 this year and then he gets a 2.5 bonus if he plays 10 games. the rangers can defer that to next year. posted by: colorado mark | august 15, 2007 at 12:29 pm smitty - the minutes for the kids will be there, due to injuries, suspensions etc, as long as the rangers don't also add journeyman f's like isbister, krog, dupuis etc. recall that ort, shanny, hossa and ?maybe straka? all missed chunks of time, and imho last season was an abnormally heathy season. that's also why the seeming d glut doesn't worry me. and i really believe that 4 months in hartford, playing ~25 minutes in all situations, would only be a good thing for staal. same maybe for dubi, with immonen and helminen gone, let dubi be the center in hartford for 1/2 season. ...fire away, my friends ... posted by: cwede | august 15, 2007 at 12:39 pm mitch or dubi - are we sure that we get the 50% off for the cap re jagr for the 08-09 season. i thought his contract signed by wash ends this yr. i also thought that next yr kicks in as an option yr but not sure what triggers it and if the powers that be would interpret that wash would be responsible for 1/2. stuart - run the numbers. as mitch wrote in that article the numbers are very tight for the 08-09 season even w/o straka and shanny (while about $ 2.5 mm of shanny's contract for this yr will count towards next yr. and if all the medium money d men other than rozy go our d would have about 4 1st or 2nd yr men not the recipe for winning the cup that yr. as for the other hossa - no thanks anyway. he always disappears come playoff time. posted by: li joe | august 15, 2007 at 01:15 pm stuart, i don't think the idea was to that the cap situation was bad for 2008-09, i think the idea was to say that, as you noted, it will be such that the departing veterans will have to be replaced by incoming youngsters. that it dovetails nicely with the maturation and development process of many of the youngsters will make it work that much better. i think the main point was that this will be the season -- and the only season -- that the rangers will go for it all with a lot of hired gun veterans. joe, jagr's option kicks in automatically if certain highly achievable criteria are met, and since those are based on the original washington contract, i'd expect the cap hit to remain the same. i believe there is in addition a team option which, if exercised, may come under scrutiny by the nhl. the bottom line -- jagr's cap amnesty was already in violation of the cba when it was first granted and was offered to the rangers to keep them quiet during the lockout, so the rangers will surely demand that it continue under any circumstance associated with the original contract. t-bird -- i'm sorry, but that's hardly an acceptable apology -- say it as if you really mean it :) posted by: dubi | august 15, 2007 at 02:14 pm i saw him in the meatpacking district on the phone outside of a club last year and he looked huge, not in a good way tho. he looks like he lost all that weight and looks very lean compared to how he has recently. good for him. when he plays his game, he is one of the best for the type of d-man he is posted by: jason | august 15, 2007 at 03:03 pm peca on broadway? (thanks to dave fischer and the usa hockey staff for the info used in this report) looking for a peca now for what seems to be what we should be calling the daily peca watch (lord forgive me for all those bad jokes this will be causing). i think the longer it takes the less a chance that the rangers will sign peca. it is my belief that the wisdom of saving some money for later at the trading deadline when you have a better chance at a better player will win out over peca. this ain't a one and done team first off would someone please show me the memo where it says the rangers are gearing up for just one run at the cup please? did i miss it or do people forget that this franchise has some talent on it? oh what because the sky will fall when jagr's contract ends? what a crock of crap and that is the only way to describe it. to say that the rangers only are looking at a one year run at the cup is not only shortsighted but is insulting to people like schoeny, renney and even sather. if schoeny thought this would be only a one year run then he had his choice of jobs elsewhere. remember we are talking about a guy who refused to accept the ranger hc job because he gave his word. schoeny has walked away from jobs because he did not think teams were as committed to winning as he is. nobody wants to win as badly as he does. tom renney is another guy who is not going to settle for one cup run and then a rebuild. any student of the game will tell you that in a rebuild neither the coach or gm ever wind up keeping their job to see it though. it is also insulting to chris drury and scott gomez who would not have signed with the rangers for a one year run at the cup. ok who here thinks these two (who could have gotten better money elsewhere)are money grubbers? yea that is what i thought too as i know neither player likes losing. right there you have first line center and second line center to build around. you have both jagr and a shanny still here to pass along their knowledge and experience which is why you find ways to develop the kids while they are still here to teach. the rangers did not bring in either drury or gomez to be rebuilders, they brought them in to build the rangers into annual cup contenders. oh and if we can take off the tunnel vision glasses for a moment, the rangers will have money to spend when jagr and shanny leave whether it be after this season or the next. and when those glasses come off people might see that if you thought the 2007 ufa class had some talent you have not seen nothing yet. want a few names to sniff at? how about just these 4 and tell me that the rangers would not make a run at at least one of them: marian hossa, nicklas lidstrom, dan heatley, and patrick marleau. anyone who thinks that when jagr or shanny leave that the rangers will not look to replace them is not paying attention. this is not a one shot deal as there is talent in the system, on the roster and awaiting to be signed. and this ain't whining either this is looking at today and tomorrow. posted by: jess | august 15, 2007 at 10:53 pm jess- "you have both jagr and a shanny still here to pass along their knowledge and experience which is why you find ways to develop the kids while they are still here to teach" bravo, jess.now why don't you pass that on to mitch beck who ongoing mantra seems to be "the kids are just not ready" posted by: czechthemout!!! | august 15, 2007 at 11:08 pm this is not a one and done, team, but there's a real urgency for some of these players (such as straka and shanny) to get one now. posted by: godot | august 15, 2007 at 11:13 pm jess - i doubt the rangers will be able to afford any of those players as free agents next yr. especially if we keep putting certain salaries on credit card for next yr re the bonus component. and hossa is always pulling a disappearing act in the playoffs with ott and atl. posted by: li joe | august 16, 2007 at 12:22 am czech mitch has a right to his view even if i disagree with it as i clearly do here. godot that is my point as for some players it is one and done but not for this team. joe nobody thought the rangers could be able to afford both drury and gomez at the same time either right? the cap number has risen every year since the return from the lockout and it is doubtful that will change. i have talked with cameron hope and if he is not perhaps one of the best contract writers in sports then i do not know who is better. i for one think that by next summer we will be talking about who the rangers added in free agency as in one of the top 4 players. if it was up to me i would add heatley or lidstrom anyway. posted by: jess | august 16, 2007 at 12:49 am jess who's saying one & done? they have depth for the future & should have the money after next season to add another ufa .but i think sather wants to go for it, & maybe he is ready to retire after this upcoming season. shanahan came here to help jagr & co win the cup. and peca wants to get on that bus. every season is suppose to be a run for it. but as of right now, i don't think they have the 2 guys to replace the two future hall of fame inductees, shanahan & jagr.and those two deserve managements support to go for it now without mortgaging the future by signing ufas. dubinsky, staal, & co will get their chance eventually. posted by: imitation | august 16, 2007 at 06:55 am one and only run!!?!! somebody is trying to get under our skin! posted by: bludgeon-uk-nyr-fan | august 16, 2007 at 07:17 am assuming the rangers sign peca, what are we imagining the lines looking like? do you see renney still putting hossa on the top line??? i suddenly feel like the team has a lot of talent but i'm having a hard time imagining the combos--not necessarily a problem for the team mind you; it's better than having too little talent. posted by: godot | august 16, 2007 at 07:34 am godot - i really hate trying to 'guess' and 'project' lines because i'm not renney and i can't predict the future but i would like to see the following: straka - gomez - jagr prucha - drury - shanahan avery - peca - callahan hossa - betts - orr rozsival - malik tyutin - girardi mara - staal pock posted by: wolfgaze | august 16, 2007 at 08:32 am as much as i'm lukewarm about the idea of bringing in peca (i too would rather see a kid get the role), a third line of avery-peca-callahan sounds like it could not only be pretty good, but also a hell of a lot of fun to watch. i know a lot of folks have avery slotted in on the second line, but i'm still hoping prucha ends up there. posted by: phild | august 16, 2007 at 08:37 am wolfgaze i like your lines, however i think i would rather have prucha switch with straka. i think prucha could work very well with gomez simply because gomez distributes the puck so well and with jagr out there gomez has two snipers to work with. in addition, prucha will hork the corners harded then straka. drury is a bit more methodical, like straka, so i think they could match up well. you put pock in there, who are your other two, making up a 23 man roster? posted by: rangerbill94 | august 16, 2007 at 09:06 am lunqvist and valiquette.... posted by: gerry | august 16, 2007 at 09:23 am i think the 'do not add peca, youth must be served' proponents are bound to be disapointed. this activity with peca indicates that the rangers braintrust believes we need another proven f, and .if they decide against peca, then they'll consider other options... either similar older more-succesful guys like jason allison or forsberg, etc, or a mid-20's not-fully-established guy with 3-6nhl seasons (hopefully, despite his czech-ness, not p.stefan - that nonsense where his cuteness ended up missing an empty net, allowing the opponent(?edmonton maybe?) was worse than the worst of lexi kovalev) posted by: cwede | august 16, 2007 at 09:32 am jess-- this is year is our year! this team has stanley cup finalist written all over it. we have the best "power forward" in the world (and i don't mean shanny) returning to 100% form. jagr alone commands 1st team defense forward/defense pairings. the drury line with shanny and avery or straka (not prucha who doesn't have the speed of straka or the strength of avery to forecheck) will flourish against the opposition's less defensive-oriented players. once we lose jagr, we will have a tremendous hole on this team. while the rangers won't be a wash thereafter, they will transform into more of a sabre-type team that has a collection of talented, decent to high scoring forwards--not one or two dominant players. and how can you even believe that we will have the cap flexibility to pay heatley (not hossa, he sucks in the playoffs) or grandpa lidstrom the big bucks after lunqvist gets a $5.5 to 6.5m/yr deal from the rangers this january. as far as the line combos, if we sign peca (which seems to be virtually a "done deal") you can't pair him with two similar players, avery and callahan. i anticipate that prucha stays on the 3rd line w/ peca and cally or avery. you need a consistent finisher on the 3rd line (prucha) and a forechecker/puck retriever for drury and shanny (avery...maybe straka). posted by: averytuff | august 16, 2007 at 10:25 am the case that was made, based on salary cap calculations, was that the rangers had only this year to make cup run with the current cast of veterans, not two, as had always been assumed based on the length of jagr's contract. that management is deferring cap dollars into next season pretty much emphasizes the point. the money that will be saved by the departures of shanahan, straka, malik, and maybe mara will be eaten up by the raises that will be required for lundqvist, rozsival, avery, tyutin, and others. but there was no suggestion that it was a "one and done" deal -- the reason the rangers have brought their young players along so cautiously, at least according to tom renney, was that they were intent on building a long-term core and didn't want to risk ruining someone by force-feeding them to the nhl too soon to win now. that will start to pay off next year, when the salary cap will mandate a turn toward the young players that have been in development these past few years. posted by: dubi | august 16, 2007 at 11:11 am gerry wolfgaze listed only 19 players, i gave him 2 goalies. that adds up to 21. wolfgaze: who are your remaining 2 players?
