(z_nut) — june 26,2007 @ 6:52am rating: 15 thumbs up re allen, 40 yrs ago there was no one this close to the base. the base flew different type of aircraft. get your head out of your arse. if you do not like the noise, move. how much simpler can it be. just my 2cents worth.   3. comment by tucsontornado d. (tucsontornado) — june 26,2007 @ 7:15am rating: 10 thumbs up rick, great job!!! i have been saying this for years. they all knew the base was there when they bought their homes. i live right by the base and love the secure feeling. i would rather our men and women know what their doing and practice than not because someone is complaining.   4. comment by b k. (#1724) — june 26,2007 @ 7:19am rating: 14 thumbs up in since 1956 my family lived at campbell & helen. i attended sam hughes elementary, mansfeld junior high, tucson high, palo verde high and the uofa. jets flew over our homes and schools, interrupting classes and lectures. it was just part of life - not an irritation. like rick, b wrote, if you don't like the noise move, if you plan to purchase a home here in tucson, check the flight patterns first.   5. comment by john n. (#4323) — june 26,2007 @ 7:55am rating: 20 thumbs up the university of arizona opened in 1885. davis monthan opened in 1925. jets, arriving in the 1950's, brought a whole new level of noise. many of the homes in the flight path were built before the base, and almost all before the jet age. although you can bash owners for living there, they are actually reducing urban sprawl and the need for more taxpayer supported infrastructure. the least we can do is reduce noise that does not impact the safety of our pilots. thank you col. laughbaum for being a man of your word - we don't exactly know how to handle that these days.   7. comment by john n. (the first 500 ' altitude change announcement was the result of 12 months of arduous negotiation.) this is the the first indication that dm finally realizes that "times are a'changing". the base can't keep operating inside city limits as it did when it was 15 miles outside the town.   9. comment by m f. (#2667) — june 26,2007 @ 9:49am rating: 9 thumbs up we live several miles from the base, and our realtor did not disclose any noise problem when we bought out house back in the 1990's. thanks to the new dm commander who is much more receptive and neighborly than the previous one.   13. comment by roy o. (royv) — june 26,2007 @ 9:55am rating: 10 thumbs up #12 - why didn't you take that up with your real estate agent? i had to sign a statement that i knew about dm and the associated noise when i purchased a home in 1997. all potential home buyers who are considering a purchase in dm's flight paths are required to sign such a form. people should do their homework before buying a home. don't jump into the deal and then gripe later.   14. comment by tony r. (view comment) let me ask you "thats the sound of freedom" freaks, since when does having your eardrums blown out a blessing? i used to, yes used to live right under the flight path and dm would crank on the afterburners right over the house. now you tell me, is that the "sound of freedom" or just plain illuse of the afterburner. i tried double pained windows and nothing worked. i will admit, i loved living there when the a-10's flew over, but the new jets suck. i know we need to keep up with the times, but something needed to be done. thank you dm, but for me, a little too late.   15. comment by b k. (#1724) — june 26,2007 @ 10:21am rating: 11 thumbs up someone here wrote, "the base can't keep operating inside city limits as it did when it was 15 miles outside the town." first of all the base never was 15-miles out from the city. second, it was the city, and the city fathers/mothers in their so-called 'wisdom', dangling from the developer's puppet strings, who encroached upon the airbase. i believe it's the city's citizens who have chosen to live around the airbase who need to come to the realization that the base was here, and will be here. they are the ones who need to make a decision whether to stay where they are, or move. as far as i have learned living here since '56, one can't escape the jet noise anywhere in the tucson valley, whether civilian or military.   16. comment by tom b. (stfram) — june 26,2007 @ 1:27pm rating: 4 thumbs up 21- hey matt, you shut down dm and the growth will stop, and will negatively effect home values in that area for years to come. anyone who lives in the flightpath and doesn't like it: move. your homes are worth even more now since they are centrally located, and you'll be able to buy a house located far away from the evil military base you hate so much.   28. comment by tony r. (#1734) — june 26,2007 @ 1:39pm rating: 4 thumbs down this comment is below your threshold. (view comment) thank you post #26, you know what i am talking about with the afterburners. and on another note, (now i will complain), why do we have to train the british here. i understand we have clear nights and what not, but those planes are by far the worse noise makers far to none. when they are here, clear out.   29. comment by roy o. (royv) — june 26,2007 @ 1:48pm rating: 6 thumbs up for the record, the a-10 aircraft at the base are very quiet as jets go. on the other hand, the f-16s assigned to the air national guard and stationed at tucson international airport do have afterburner capability and are relatively loud. the group at the ang trains pilots in the f-16 all year 'round. any country we sell the f-16 to sends its pilots to the ang at the airport for training. do not blame dm entirely for your discomfort since it may not be dm-assigned aircraft that are offending your over-developed sensitivities.   30. comment by richard o. (taicho) — june 26,2007 @ 1:52pm rating: 2 thumbs down this comment is below your threshold. (view comment) i disagree with the commander at d.m. i was fire chief at moffett field near san jose in 1973 when nasa's galileo collided with a navy p-3 on approach. nasa lost a number of their top people who were riding on that plane and the navy lost all but one of the crew of the p-3. a factor in the collision was an approach procedure where large jet aircraft on approach were required to maintain altitude of 5,000 feet until they were very close to the approach end of the runway. this in essence caused the pilot to almost dive from 5,000 down to the runway level and flare out to land. in the case of the galileo, the pilot never had a chance to see the p-3 approaching him from an angle, since the p-3 was on a base leg to land. this procedure was applied in response to noise complaints from "citizens" in san jose. i don't think the commander of dm ought to be catering to that kind of "citizen" here in tucson. seems our military is going in a touchy feely direction. no wonder we can't win a war.   31. comment by phil d. (off2glamis) — june 26,2007 @ 2:47pm rating: 1 thumb up with the talks of us going into a recession if people keep bitching about the noise what would happen if dm were to close? there are such a small number of employers that hire thousands of people can we afford for the base to close? dm was there long before the new houses were built. that is not any different then people that build a new custom home out on silverbell and the start bitching about the smell as soon as they move in. (give me a break). do your home work before you buy a home! as #18 wrote “people were complaining about the trains......well hello ....where there are railroad tracks there is usually a train...” same hold true for an airport or an air force base!   33. comment by clarence r. (view comment) close dm now! i know, in some cases, that they were here first and that is a very important economic engine for tucson. it is just not practical or safe to have a large air force base in the middle of a metro area. i say move it 30 -40 miles west of tucson. i know they will have the same problem 30-40 years from now, but so be it. every other base closing did not bring the ruin predicted, many became research parks etc. i am not anti-patriotic i am anti-noise.   36. comment by mike s. (view comment) for all those who are saying that the jet noise is too loud, try living near any other air force base or near an airport in the flight path and you will realize that the majority of the planes flying over (a-10's) are pretty quite in comparison. sure there are some f-16's taking off in full burner but they are usually alert aircraft doing the job of protecting your sorry whining butts. the rest of the aircraft taking off and landing that you complain about are here for the same reason that most of us are, the weather. now how many of you can say you bought or had a house built in the flight path before there were jets taking off and landing from dm? probably none as nearly every house in the flight path has been sold at least once since being built except for rita ranch which was mostly bought by military members when it was being built and the rest of its members knew about being in the flight path but didn't care. next thing you will hear about is there same whiners moving out to vail and complaining about hearing the drag strip and get it shut down and then complaining about kids street racing in front of their house. btw, if dm closes what is going to happen to the over 4,000 aircraft?   44. comment by levi m.
