lort smith initiative - tiwi islands
dog health education program
the
lort smith
animal hospital
initiated a dog health education program which was held 30 may - 3 june 2005
in the tiwi islands,
north of darwin.
the aim was to revive a stalled animal management program following the
collapse of the tiwi health board. the project was conducted in conjunction
with corporate supporter microchips australia (rick walduck), james cook
university (prof richard speare, virginia boon), nungalinya college (amanda
donohoe), sydney university (doug dixon–hughes), university of western
sydney (roselyn dixon), amrric (philip donohoe), tiwi island local government
(maurice rioli and bernard tipiloura), and private practitioner dr stephen
cutter.
three
components underpinned the program: education using nungalinya
college contacts and students; dog
treatments and surgical procedures (training and support was provided to a
student from sydney);
and consideration of a study design which would develop an evidence base for
ongoing activities. professor richard speare from james cook
university was the
central educator delivering information to peole with a wide range of
knowledge levels, including health centre staff, council staff and community
residents.
outcomes
of the program include:
funding secured for programs
form tilg
ongoing educational activities
with an emphasis on human health
a pilot zoonotic research
project design (kidney disease),
and veterinary services to
three communities.
as
with any sustainable program results will not be instantaneous, but will
develop over time with consistent and regular service provision to reduce
animal numbers and thereby improve animal health.

northern peninsula
area
a
similar program was held in the northern peninsula area (npa) region of cape
york by queensland health tropical public health unit (ursula weston) in
partnership with amrric [drs' ian gunn (monash university), jack shield (dpi
qld), rob irving (private), stephen cutter (private), and sophie constable
(private and mentored)] and james cook university (professor rick speare).
the program involved community council from bamaga, seisa, new mapoon,
injinoo and imagico.
torres
straight islander and aboriginal participants are with the environmental
health program and some are studying to be environmental health officers
(ehos) at batchelor institute of indigenous tertiary education, nt. the
program was educational, focusing on key components of service delivery
including dog handling, the use of restricted drugs and injection technique.
topics
included:
animal management and public
health associations
indigenous environmental
health workers (iehws) and dog control programs
parasites and zoonosis, and
animal management program
design and dog handling.
the
program was fully interactive and was driven by iehws and their needs.
it
is expected that this iehw capacity building event will support cairns-based
vets who provide ongoing services to the area and inform the queensland
department of health state initiative on animal management and health. a
detailed report is being prepared for the commonwealth agency funding this
program.

amrric agm at the urban management conference, canberra, october 2005
because
it is difficult for members to come from all over this vast land to meet, we
try to hold annual and special general meetings in conjunction with national
conferences that members are most likely to attend. the executive believes it
is opportune to hold the 2005 amricc agm in october at the urban management
conference in canberra.
an agenda and relevant papers will be circulated prior to this meeting. an
update regarding business planning and budget matters will also be presented.
