lost years could be a refference to the fact that only 300-400 hardcore people were involved with the scene then ,it may be a term from the other 5000 or so that were listening to spandau ballet and brining up baby lol.best years for me mainly because i was in my early twenties and had such great fun meeting wonderful committed people!baz a

hi daz, how you and jo doing? still in lestoh?this site is the anti-dote to the "northern didn't happen in the 80s" revisionists. one of the moderators simsy started a thread that eventually listed 100s of great venues from the era so we've established how great it was to ba a part of it then. and like you i'm grateful that others can remember bits of it better than me.cheersady

the only time i usually see the term lost years or wilderness years of the 80's is from those who weren't there. i went to two all-nighters a weekend along with soul nights and all dayers during the 80's and like you daz some of the best times of my life making some lifelong friendships along the way!!!! many of the venues back then boasted healthy attendances, some not so healthy but thats no different to these days.

got to agree with chalky there were loads of venues going at the time least of all the tracky club in barnsley which was a weekly venue (un -heard of now) which got healthy attendences with people from all over the country (if my memory serves me well a certain mr croadsdall ventured up here to the chilly north one night) i may add it ran weekly for 15 years never missed a weekend (780 nights could possibly hold a record for the longest amounts of nights a soul venue ran), we also had to endure chalkys spots only joking.geeoooordie

the 80's were absolutely wonderful times for the northern scene. some of the top sounds ever were brought to the fore in the 80's.great people, great music, great venues. i wish i was that "lost" again. don't think i'd have the energy these days though.phil

i have nothing but good things to say about most of the 80s - starting with the unforgattable 6ts nights at west hampstead (best club ever, best time ever), ending and going into the very early 1990s with the golden era of modern soul and all it entailed (look away now, pete), alex lowes' weekenders when they were aimed predominatly at soul fans and where everyone felt like they were part of something special, horsell on a wednesday night with steve hobbs and a weekly rotation of guests (not to mention some of the most brilliant all-dayers ever put on by anyone, any time or anywhere), the likes of lew kirton and johnny bristol playing at small london venues, wonderfully appreciative turnouts at sidedoor soul and similar nights all over the south, the last truly great caister weekender with lenny williams and richard 'can't stop loving you' rogers, , there was so much good stuff going on all the time that we must have taken much of it for granted. it wasn't all great, but there's very little about the 80s that i'd like to lose from a soul fan's point of view....

the 80's is when the uk soul scene came of age.the 'pop' fans and fashion victims that came along in the mid 70's had, by then, come and gone.rotherham clifton hall, cleethorpes winter gardens, bradford queens hall, warrington parr hall, stafford totw (and more) kept things going for the soul fans who stayed.new blood came along who were genuinely interested in the music rather than because it was the 'new big thing' (because it wasn't)... and playlists became broader, more interesting, more diverse and (imo) more soulful.great decade, great years, great times (that, sadly, so many people missed). sean

i agree it was the time when the 200000 kids who passed through the doors of the casino and other 1970s venues were getting married, starting families etc. i was one of them.it was also the same time that northern and jazz funk went seperate ways, so another reason for the 'lost years' reference.record prices died, and the scene shrunk.thats not to say it died in any way but in reality the conveyor belt of traditional new material slowed down and was enhanced by diversity.it must be said though that some of the discoveries in the 80s, have been claimed as already known about in the 70s but were not good enough to get the exposure they deserved due to the number of records discovered then.in any case, its history now and the scene is probably bigger now that ever before.ed

i tentatively took my first steps onto the niter scene in the early 80's cut my soul teeth on the likes of totw...jamaica club in glos ( that was a dive lol )...of course the 100 club...a couple of those alldayers that popped up at yate leisure centre...bradford queens hall...etc etc...for me it was a good time and a break from all the 100mph stuff that had gone before...i even went to a niter in aberdeen whilst living up that way for a bit...leicester n hinckley...station hotel in donny....crowle...thorne loadsa venues.......so for me it did not die away and like has been mentioned before those that were there at the start of it all were busy having kids and mortgages etc.....i do remember Ł20 being a lot to pay for a record ...and knew i was on the slippery slope of a collector when the price increased to Ł50 and i didnt bat an eyelid....fond memories indeed...made many friends some of whom i havent laid eyes on since the 80's....but i do have some dodgy pics of karen mc hugh ( wigley )....and a few more peeps with terrible 80's hairdos...remember that mushroom perm thingy???.... lost years my arse cookie

quote(sean hampsey @ oct 21 2007, 07:46 pm) the 80's is when the uk soul scene came of age.the 'pop' fans and fashion victims that came along in the mid 70's had, by then, come and gone.rotherham clifton hall, cleethorpes winter gardens, bradford queens hall, warrington parr hall, stafford totw (and more) kept things going for the soul fans who stayed.new blood came along who were genuinely interested in the music rather than because it was the 'new big thing' (because it wasn't)... and playlists became broader, more interesting, more diverse and (imo) more soulful.great decade, great years, great times (that, sadly, so many people missed). seanabsolutely seanthose were wicked venues - there were more than three hundred rammed into clifton hall! the best soul times of my life - wonderful music, wonderful crowd. there was also some great nights and leics odd fellows and loughborough town hall - amongst others.

quote(chalky @ oct 22 2007, 10:41 am) i remember at least one all-nighter in norwich back in the 80's, at the university. think ozzie got into a bit of trouble for messing with some talk remember it well, it was with that big guy from cumbria, i had to jump in and break it up. it was the night after the tv cameras were at horwich. did a double that weekend, horwich to norwich in a mk1 escort with a bunch of messy heads. what a journey. happy days.tomo

agree withbaz 100% hs to the origin of the term, namely compared to the 70's the 80's were really only around 900 hardcore travelling all over the country, not the lack of venues etcas, because as we can all see above, there were many great clubs at the time.
