nutrasweet and splenda killing me?
i have been trying to reduce the amount of sugar i ingest by switching over to the alternatives because i don’t want to have to give up the things i love just to lose a few pounds. early on i tried nutrasweet products, which have aspartame in them, and like most of my family, if i eat or drink too many things with aspartame, i begin to get really bad headaches, sometimes to the point of migraines, and so i couldn’t really continue to punish myself that way, so i went back to the regular juices that didn’t have any additional sugar added. it was my happy medium. then i heard about nestea’s splenda drinks that didn’t use aspartame, but instead sweetened using real sugar that was changed so that it had the sweetening effect, without the bad side effects of real sugar.
i couldn’t buy the splenda drinks fast enough, and what happened? i started getting head aches again, and oddly enough, i started feeling a little more negative and lethargic, at first i thought it was the weather, but after a while, it didn’t make sense.
i looked up what splenda actually is, and really it is sucralose. sucralose is a chlorinated sucrose derivative used as an artificial sweetener. i looked up sucralose side effects, and what did i find? a whole list of sites, blogs, medical journals, news paper articles all saying the same thing: sucralose may have side effects!
those side effects include:
bloating
abdominal pain
gas, sometimes painful
nausea
heartburn
diarrhea
headaches
migraines (severe headaches)
heart palpitations (fluttering, irregular heartbeats)
shortness of breath
depression
anxiety and panic attacks
spaced-out or drugged sensation
dizziness
so we live in a world where the real sugar makes you fat, and the fake sugar, if you are sensitive to it, can cause you a whole world of pain and issues.
what is someone like me, with nearly no will power, supposed to do? i am addicted to the sweet flavours of barq’s root beer and other drinks, but the low calorie, no sugar products give me head aches and cause mild depression.
and before you say, just drink more water, i have tried that in the past. my cravings get to the point where i binge drink on coke cola or barq’s root beer, and that is never good. are there low sugar juices that don’t make use of all this chemical crap, that are still good to drink? are the natural sugars in regular juice so bad that i should be avoiding them?
if you have experience in any of these issues, please let me know.

upgraded to wordpress 2.3
this blog has been upgraded to wordpress 2.3. is this a good thing? i am not yet sure. i have been noticing some errors, but the support forums say it is because of some plugins, but i am not quite sure they are right, as the files mentioned in the error are core wordpress files.
i guess we will have to wait and see. now i just need to get into tagging.

bell unlimited data plan
one of the things i have been wanting to see in canada for a while now is an unlimited data plan that is reasonable in price (sub $100/m) and that need has been fulfilled by bell. bell canada has released an unlimited data plan for only $75/m. while this is still much more expensive than plans in the u.s.a., i am still quite excited, as i would be willing to pay seventy-five dollars during a two week road trip to have access to the internet from my laptop in areas where i could receive such a signal.
i found out about this on redflagdeals, a great place to find great deals in canada.
i am not sure how long this plan has existed, but i am very happy to see this sort of thing beginning to show up here in canada. for far too long we have paid through the nose for cellular data plans. i almost want to take a road trip vacation, just so i can buy a cellular data card for my laptop and try out the service. (i could also use a vacation as well…)
the point of this post? just to express my excitement over this development. now if other carriers would lower their prices, maybe we could get some competition going.

my four letter domain project: xfep.com
so, some people have been wondering what i have been up to with my free time. i usually just laugh at them and ask “what free time?”
they then usually point out that i haven’t been blogging on here, and the reason for that is i am working on my four letter dot com domain name, building a brand out of it as there is no point in having a four letter domain if you aren’t going to use it.
i have decided to enter a very saturated niche, mostly because i think i can bring something new and interesting to the world of blogging about blogging, and share my problogger experiences.
so if you are interested in seeing me write about what it is like to be a full time blogger, check out extra for every publisher.
i have also started, what will hopefully be a weekly podcast on the site, so please check that out as well.

us and canadian dollar even
well, the days of the us calling our money monopoly money because of its weak exchange are now gone, as our canadian dollar hit parity with their own greenback.
i wanted to mark this occassion on my blog because it means that canada is doing well, and the us is doing poorly.
this unfortunately is bad for international online workers like myself though as our wages have to be converted from us dollars to canadian dollars, and that isn’t as much in my pocket as it used to be.
here is a quote from a canoe money article that made me laugh:
but with the loonie puffing its chest and floating ever near parity with the u.s. dollar once more, the country is still waiting to see any spoils.
already beleaguered manufacturers and exporters are warning that the more valuable dollar makes their products more expensive, and less competitive, than their competition elsewhere. the tourism industry is struggling to keep their richest foreign market from steering clear of their northern neighbours.
“i think if i open my window i can hear people at niagara-on-the-lake screaming,” said lewis soroka, an economics professor at st. catharines’ brock university.
seems as though sabine and i will have to make some trips to the usa to buy our goods, now that our dollar is worth something there, and there are no deals to be found here.
what a crazy world we live in.
sidenote: i predict that by christmas $1.10 us will be equal to $1.00 canadian.

xbox 360 is back
well, a little while back now, my xbox 360 was acting all weird, and so i had to send it away to microsoft. yesterday, i got it back. not the same one i sent to them of course, but a new, clean one and even nicer, they sent one month of free xbox live gold membership. not something i need, so i will probably raffle it away, despite its relatively low value. so keep an eye out for more of that if you would actually use a month of xbox live gold.
i am just happy that my xbox 360 is back, and i can now try out all the demos i have been missing. bioshock is totally amazing!

pain and more pain
well, about three days ago now, i was rollerblading with sabine, and we were racing. i pushed myself too far, and fell flat on my left leg, scraping it open, and leaving some good chunks of my skin on the parking lot. the rocks embedded in the skin, muscle and blood on my leg were pretty painful to have removed.
it is slowly healing up nicely, but since from my knee to my ankle is pretty much a giant scab, it constantly feels like my leg is trying to rip itself open.
add to this getting two more of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday. leaving one last one to be removed in a month. i don’t think i could take much more pain. it feels like someone broke my jaw. last night i had this weird sensation like my tooth was still there, and they were still trying to remove it. very strange, not very comfortable.
so i am currently managing all this pain (with pills of course), and not getting much work done. jacob has been really great about it, and sabine is trying to be.
hopefully, i can get caught up on work a bit today. isn’t life grand?

sorting things out
well, i have to admit to having been super busy lately.
here is an update on my life.
work
i have been working on is my home as much as possible. i find the project very difficult, much more than i thought it would be. managing people takes skill and that is something that i don’t have naturally. i am learning though as i go along and jacob and ahmed have been great at giving me pointers.
other than that, we finally launched autojab, which is a blog about cars. i think it will do very well.
home
sabine and i are doing great. we have been visited by my mom and grandma recently which was nice. i hope to see more of my family down this way at one point or another.
the house is really coming together now that we have window coverings on more than half of the windows. there is still much to be done, and we still don’t have a lawn yet. we’ve been getting lots of rain lately, and so we almost have a small pond for a front yard.
wedding
for those of you that haven’t seen any pictures, i have put most of them on my flickr account. for those of you that don’t have high speed internet, like my dad, contact me and i can send you a dvd.
sidenote: i am still planning on sending my dad one, as soon as i find the time to burn it and mail it out. i know… i am slow at doing it, but it has been crazy here.
wrapup
other than that, i have been working, sleeping, eating and that’s about it. i have many great ideas floating around in my head which i hope will help make me more money in the long run. owning a home is much more expensive than i thought it would be, and the american dollar better improve soon…
i miss everyone, and don’t forget, you can contact me.

random fiction: fantasy, fate and the dream
jacob, a geek in his own right, stood up from his office chair. he had been playing an online version of dungeons and dragons for nearly ten hours, and while he was ready to kill the last knight in the sacred temple, he heard a strange voice from upstairs.
heading up to the main floor, from his dungeon of a basement, he saw a celtic broadsword standing straight up, with its blade embedded in his living room floor. splinters of wood were sprayed around the blade, but other than that, there were no signs that anyone had been inside his house. before even touching the sword, jacob ran outside to see if there was anyone hiding nearby. after searching the bushes, and the back yard, he returned inside.
a small piece of what looked to be ancient parchment, or a dirty tree bark scroll, was wrapped tightly around the handle. opening it, jacob attempted to read the calligraphy.
it was only one line of text and read simply, ‘find your animal spirit and complete the quest.’
