okay, so maybe i lied about that last post being the last post, but this is too important to let sit. the latest intel chipset, the 82573e and 82573l (included on the supermicro pdsmi+ core 2 duo motherboard) has a critical eeprom bug that causes linux to issue a dmesg saying "tx hang" - freezing your network up for anywhere between a few seconds to a few minutes. click for the bash script to fix it (requires ethtool).

happy mlk, everyone. this is probably my last post to this version of the website. the server my site was on went down - as did most of the backup copies, so it took a while for me to get things back online. this site hasn't seen a major revamp in almost a decade, so i'm going to try and chalk off some time to retool it. i've now had a website for nearly eleven years!

i'm still alive, still toiling (joyously!) as the ceo of pbwiki. we've released a lot of great features, big and small, in the past month, including wikilets and collations. i'm learning a lot about corporate strategy / budgeting / decisionmaking and meeting a lot of people. i've been having fun with other things, too - i got my advanced scuba certification in honduras, attended my cousin's wedding in new york, got my motorcycle license (no, i don't have a bike), and finally learned how to hover in a helicopter; in fact, did my first real takeoffs & landings today. yay! the next superhappydevhouse is june 2-4, this time it's not at my house, all weekend long, and a competition. how's that for an experiment?! please rsvp on upcoming and let your friends know about it!

specism: a moral framework

much of the strength of the west lies in its ability to accept critique and make fun of itself. muslims calling for the cessation of free speech don't seem to realize that they are weakening themselves by uniting against criticism.

fun tool
feb 2, 2006
i have a fun new tool for you, my faithful readers. it's based on zip codes. zip codes are very handy for identifying people's locations because they're broad enough that most people are willing to give you their zip code (not a privacy violation) but specific enough to let you know what part of the city folks hail from. google maps doesn't expose an api for looking up lat/long for a zip codes, and the tiger database from the us 2000 census is badly incomplete. so i patched together my own little database about a year ago from a lot of different sources and i think it's the most complete free zip database out there now. i then tonight decided to slap a quick little google maps mashup on top of it and release it as a gift. enjoy.

what a month!
jan 30, 2006
things have been pretty great and pretty busy this month. i spoke at xerox parc and on a panel with the two guys who argubly started the pc industry in silicon valley. my company got its first term sheet from a vc, we had our seventh hackathon at my place and i even kissed a hot swedish linux kernel hacker. i'm not making this up! the company is growing quickly and my non-profit is finally starting to get some of its finances in order, even if we have a long way to go before we're properly structured.

tunis, ho!
aug 26, 2005
so i'm going to be going to tunis for the world summit on the information society. i just bought my plane tickets using sidestep and got a round trip airfare of under $800, including all fees, taxes, etc. and this was for a flight with only a single stopover (frankfurt) - the flight there includes a 10 hour stopover in frankfurt, so i'm looking forward to grabbing some beer & sausages on my way through. rocking. especially when the best expedia could do was a 2+ stop $1841 multiple-carrier flight. it pays to check around!

htmlentities() & blackberries
june 20, 2005
never, and i do mean never use the php function htmlentities(). at least in the php 4.1.2 version packaged with debian, it seems to run somewhat non-deterministically roughshod over utf-8 input. i spent several days banging my head against a bug where japanese titles would periodically come out as junk and periodically be displayed correctly, and what it came down to was htmlentities(). i realized that actually, given the context, i didn't need to escape any html at all and that i could kill two birds with one stone (removing a bug and adding a feature) by simply ripping out the call. gack! i had a reasonably nice weekend picking berries, walking on the beach, and eating brunch at the ritz-carleton in half moon bay after a vigorous discussion about the end of the world (or at least civilization as we know it) with tim, an old friend of mine who surprised me by dropping into my quaker meeting. peanutbutterwiki is almost at 4000 users and i'm heading off to supernova tomorrow to demo im smarter and pbwiki. (i'm managing to sneak in free by asking kevin nicely.) i might also show off an alpha of botblock.

hernia
april 13, 2005
immediately upon returning from a very nice weekend that served as respite to one of the most hectic and intense weeks of my life, i find myself tossed back into the fray a-full. helping put together a 1000 person party, orchestrate software development for an international non-profit, developing the next release of my company's service, organizing movie night, trying to find a new and improved location for superhappyfunhouse, finishing our company's financing round and figuring out what to do about bringing other people on board, reviewing a kickass comic to help its creators, helping my friend recover data from his two trashed hard drives, seeing what it would take to buy an island in fiji, trying to understand and begin involvement in local politics, learning farsi, read the decline and fall of the roman empire...all while trying to keep my clothes washed, hook my friends up, and be there for those who need me...and feeling a little short on the task. my head is exploding. it's good; i'd rather be too busy than underbusy. but when you're operating at near 100% capacity as-is, the natural fluctuations can understandably periodically take you over capacity, which is basically where i'm at now. especially given that my treo's screen has cracked and my car's brakes need replacing. you'd think that as an independent entrepreneur i could keep myself out of meetings, but this and last week seem to have gotten full with them.

(they like oranges.) there was even some kayaking, but it wasn't always done in the kayak.

funny business idea
april 6, 2005
so yesterday, i came up with this halfway hilarious and halfway ingenious business idea to let bloggers automatically mail out postcards of their latest blog entries. (we all have people in our lives who are never and i mean never going to read your blog but who want to stay up on your life.) you give the service a link to your blog's rss feed and a set of postal addresses. whenever you update your site with a new post, the service prints out postcards to all of your recipients and dumps them in the mail. you pay a buck per post per person. the premium package ($2/post) is effectively length-unlimited and mails out on nice paper in a security envelope. given bulk mailer techniques, this setup is fully automatable.

urgency
march 19, 2005
the confounding nature of much of what is on the internet is its false urgency. all information is treated as urgent and spreads with the eagerness of wildfire in a dry forest. tools by the dozens, hundreds of editors, and thousands of sites exist solely for expediting this flow of information at levels of responsiveness previously reserved for dispatches concerning possible nuclear launches. the problem with this model is that only a vanishingly small proportion of the information being shared has actual time-value; namely, needs to be understood and/or acted on in a timely fashion. this false prioritization encourages people to let information interrupt them at nearly any other task. it is self-justified, as the information *might* be imporant. the constant task switching that results from attempting to stay on top of a pile of such a torrent of petty facts hinders real work. the very fluidity of information flow that was designed to improve efficiency deters it by encouraging overconsumption. it is only by correctly ascertaining the time-value of information that we can hope to be fully productive.after years of spending hours a day trying to stay abreast of each and every development - to the point where i had read nearly every story on slashdot hours before its release and could beat news.com by at least a day - i realized that those stories that i did find important and relevant universally made it to me within a day or two by way of concerned friends and that the time-value of this information almost never proved such that a two-day lead on an occasional piece would provide return on an investment of hours of daily research. indeed, nearly all of the benefit i found in being so up-to-date was the ability to put on appearances of being clever in being so knowledgeable about recent things...but really i just showed myself a fool for whittling away so much of my time. so i've actually blocked myself from the major news sites - i get my news by way of friends and the economist and i find the combination of both more than enough to keep me as abreast of things as i need be, with a surfeit of time at my hands as a result, which then can be applied towards more useful and rewarding endeavors.
optimism
march 19, 2005
the chief concern of an entrepreneur is the annoyance of others. for wherever s/he sees that others find fault with the world, an opportunity exists for such a person to find cause to fix this for profit. one might think then an entrepreneur to be of a very bitter and unpleasant cut, expert at finding fault with everything. but such is not the case; for the complainer finds fault with the things that cannot be fixed, or at least makes no attempt to right wrongs. but the entrepreneur takes it upon himself to specialize in discovering wrongs that may be righted and in honing his abilities to make wrongs right. it is therefore that while a complainer excels in pessimism for believing so many things wrong in the world, the entrepreneur excels in optimism for believing so many wrongs capable of positive amendment.
sleepers
march 11, 2005
this movie night, we watched sleepers. it really was far too drawn-out. i'm often a fan of the melodramatic shots, story arcs, flashbacks, and other artistic froufrous, but this took the cake. i mean, the movie could have been a half-hour tv special, with ads. the simple, painfully-predictable, plodding plot couldn't be saved even by a superstar cast. and the dialogue was excruciating; exactly how many times can a narrator get away with saying "the night everything changed..." or "the night our lives changed forever..."? bad, but not funny-bad. just bad. 2/10.

on saturday, it was incredibly gorgeous in san francisco. the intense loveliness of the day gave me a fierce bug of cabin fever and wanderlust. i briefly looked at getting a last-minute flight to anchorage to watch the start of the iditarod or driving to new orleans to eat some cajun food. my slightly-more-rational side ended up "settling" for a road trip to an unusually wet death valley. i grabbed my friend maha and we took to the road late saturday night, returning late sunday night. it was a lot of driving: death valley is 540 miles from my house and it was there and back in 30 hours. i'm recovering, but a few of the pictures came out alright. zatoichi: the blind swordsman
feb 10, 2005
when i saw the subtitles first greet the protagonist of our film last night with "oh! blind masseur.." i thought it a hilarious typo (since he was clearly a blind master). but no, behold, next scene he's working out the knot in some poor enamored woman's back. he is a blind masseur. and an excellent swordsman. the film continued along in this surprising and bizarre way, intermixing blood-splatering iaido (which i practiced a bit; it was neat to see moves i knew on the big screen - it's about making your final blow on your draw of the sword, very much the antithesis of swordplay) with rhythmic dancing (and rhythmic farming and rhythmic jumping in the mud) right out of some japanese hybrid of stomp and blue man group. oh yeah, and there's the crazy neighbor's kid who runs around screaming in his underpants. seriously.excellent swordsmanship, excellent tap dancing, and i'm not sure i knew what happened to the plot, but didn't care any more by the time the entire cast (some of whom had already been killed) showed up for a grand tap-dancing finale. sheer zaniness. and the protagonist, author, and director are the same blonde japanese guy. go figure! 8/10.

shaun of the dead
feb 2, 2005
tonight's movie night selection was shaun of the dead - a funny british take on dawn of the dead, but not entirely outside of the horror niche - so it's not exactly a spoof. you're laughing, wincing, and jumping for fright all through the movie. i'm generally not a fan of horror movies, but shaun of the dead managed to take itself lightly enough to be amusing while still being a worthy movie in its own right. the editing (both sound and visuals) was superb. it was interesting to find a film witty, horrifying, and hilarious all at once, even if it was a bit of work to grok the fast, thick british. 7.5/10

movie night reviews
jan 27, 2005
so since my roommate alan and i got netflix and i've got a projector, every wednesday night, our house is having movie night at 7:30pm - let me know if you'd like to come!last wednesday we watched my dinner with andre, which i thought i'd like, since i enjoyed waking life so much and i was told that the "witty talk-oriented nature" of andre was likely to appeal to me. unfortunately, the movie was simply inane. while it could have been witty and thought-provoking or at least hilariously zany, it was more like listening to an old stoner recount the stories of his youth. it just dragged on and i don't feel i got anything at all from the discourse; i just stopped listening after a while. 2/10.this wednesday we watched the tao of steve, which was a pretty clever movie about a fat philosopher "dex" who embraces a few basic concepts about what appeals to women (i.e., "the tao of steve") and applies them to get in bed with ridiculously gorgeous women. i didn't know whether to laugh or wince at the accuracy of the tao. predictably, steve falls for a girl who doesn't succumb to his mechanism. a fun and biting commentary on the dating scene. 7/10.

lots of meetings today with cool companies; it turns out that a lot of folks are eager to interface with im smarter - sweet! i woke up this morning feeling terribly sore in my arms, as if i had worked out vigorously the night before. sitting down in front of my computer to start the day (with support emails and forums posts), i felt blood on my leg. looking down, i saw a nasty spider bite. that's right - my muscles were sore because i was poisoned. between that and the red bull, it's a hell of a way to start a day. :) dang thing still is sore, but hopefully should be better by tomorrowish. i just hope i can find the punk spider that did this to me and pull a garfield. the past week has been fun and intense: juggling launch, fixing bugs, handholding users through the install, and keeping the servers happy and fed. there's a *lot* of work in front of me - my "short term todo" is three pages long, single spaced. mindboggling oddness

it's one of my goals in life to eventually start a university. i decided today it was time to start putting down on paper why and get people's feedback.

opg v diebold
nov 17, 2003
went to federal court in san jose today; "off suing bad guys" said my im away message. you see, my non-profit almost got unplugged when diebold sent a cease and desist to our isp, because a client of ours had a page with a hyperlink on it to memos that discuss the various questionably legal things diebold has done with our country's voting systems. (one of the many notable tidbits from the memos: "i wonder why bob dole got negative 12,000 votes in this county?") not being too happy about it, we're working with the eff to beat the legal stuffing out of them for trying to shut us down. i ranted on this topic to xeni.

huge party

our house put on an absolutely massive party on saturday, with 3 djs, 150+ people, heat lamps, hot tub, surfboards, and a silly amount of very tasty (& rather spiked) tropical beverages.

ssx3
oct 23, 2003
i've never wanted a video game so bad in my life, but i can't buy it because my best friend promised me he'd get it for me for my birthday, which is this coming sunday the 26th. (i'm gonna be 25!) grr...can't wait for ssx3! i want it! i want it! (for reference, ssx is just about my favorite video game ever - our house has three copies of ssx tricky!!) update: received ssx3 as birthday present. won't see sun for two weeks.

chimes
oct 20, 2003
just for fun, i've made a set of four simple "chimes" sounds for use in computing environments that communicate a notice, alert, warning, or error, based on the the theory that tone patterns are a simple and universal way to convey urgency / success. these tones are free for you to use in whatever application you see fit.

musica
sept 29, 2003
i just got reason working about two hours ago. i gave it a whirl with the keyboard that i have sitting around and my mic and was pretty impressed by what a total musical loser like myself was able to do while learning the tool in such a short amount of time. reason rocks.

the joy of pain
sept 27, 2003
i went with my friends peter and gordon to half dome in yosemite as a day hike. there was some mixture of stupidity and bravery in the assault, because it was a ~18 mile hike involving 5000 feet of elevation gain. we got up at 6:30am, were at the trailhead by 8:30am and didn't get back until 7:30pm or so, at which point we were all ready to die. it was gorgeous up there, though.

more fun
sept 23, 2003
today my non-profit achieved the objective i had for it when i originally founded it two years ago: to host 100 not-for-profit servers. it's been a long, hard path with many problems and setbacks, but it's really fantastic that it's come as far as it has.
it's update day
sept 19, 2003
wow, lots to write about today. i got by car back from bascom trim - they were great! they even went the extra mile and buffed my whole car to make it supershiny. yay! i'm so happy to have my baby back. speaking of cars, i'm attending a pizza comedy club on the 25th of october (a day before my birthday). err...i mean traffic school. we'll its actually all the same. california cracks me up sometimes.
ten dollars?
sept 19, 2003
today my roommate andy bought a waffle maker. it was gorgeous, tiny, non-stick, and can cook tasty waffles in about three minutes. it looks very modern. it cost ten dollars new, in the box. remind me to never ever get into the consumer electronics space. really.
more hilarity
sept 19, 2003
life is funny. as my roommate chris says, "you just can't make this stuff up!" we're enjoying day after day of insanely perfect weather here in california. my friend jason and his girl anne are around and we went hiking and wine tasting together. i'm dating a beautiful and ambitious woman. progress on my company has been rapid in the past week and a half, with unexpectedly large numbers of people coming out of the woodwork to help. the non-profit is doing well and continuing to grow fast, albeit having some growing pains recently. we're up to seven cabinets of equipment at he.contrary to rumor, i did not leave there because i was unhappy. i really enjoyed my work and continue to assist them and cheer them on. i simply had to leave to start a company, something i've needed to do for a long time. :)
economy & stuff
sept 2, 2003
the economy is definitely up, folks. in the last two months, the number of new dovebid auctions (indicating companies liquidating their inventories) has dropped to near-zero and the number of spontaneous recruitment requests i've received has shot way up (in 1999, i got several calls/emails a week - in 2001 not a single one - i've received five recruiter-calls in the past five weeks). these are david's crude and unscientific metrics, but i think they do hold some water. i think we're on the upswing again...finally. this time, it's about profit. whew.the 8th is my last day there, since i'm leaving to start coceve. it's exciting but bittersweet; i'm glad to finally be doing what i need to be doing, but i'll miss the incredible people. had an incredible party at the new house, to which cool people showed up with film crews in tow. party ended at 4:30am, david got 2 hours of sleep and woke up to go watch jay get married.

wowbusy
aug 5, 2003
i'm just wowbusy these days and it's fantastic. i'm getting housed, getting my car fixed, growing my non-profit, starting a company, taking scuba lessons, and putting sick hours into my job. did i mention i'm helping my friend run for governor? no, i'm not sleeping, but life is good. i'm a little dizzy, but i'm about as happy as it gets. hugs all around. :)

steganographic whitepaper
jan 10, 2003
here is an unfinished whitepaper covering some ideas i had about encoding steganographic data within a series of analog decisions. it's poorly written and was rejected from the conference i submitted it to, so i'll just put it here as-is until i have time to polish it and make it into a real paper. if you're wondering; this was just for fun and has nothing to do with either my job or my non-profit.
