no "links of the week" this week
i was offline for most of the week, so no links this week, sorry. i have a great excuse, though!
we were sailing around some amazingly beautiful places that are way to crowded during summer but fantastic in autumn or spring. we had lovely weather with mild winds for start and ended with some serious sailing gin winds up to 35 knots which rose to 50 while landing in home marina.

subtext skins: genericblue skin updated again
i look like my port of genericblue skin did go all that well. reader notified me that i left some custom controls in there.
so i made another update and updated the subtext skins entry, but it usually takes a while that admin confirms my update.

finally i (legally) bought some music
i love music. i like listening to many kinds of music so i have tons of it in digital format. all of which is not paid for. i have tons of cds and m has many too, but it's been a while since i bought cd. i prefer digital formats. this week couple of major artists (madonna, nin, radiohead, oasis, jamiroquai,..) decided to ditch their record labels and go "solo". there is much debate around the web why this is good and that those bands are already filthy reach. but for it is a sing that there is something terribly wrong in music industry and some kind of change is imminent. hell yeah! since itunes store is not available in our neck of the woods (where is itunes eu?!) i had a unique opportunity to legally buy music from a major artists today. so i proudly purchased in rainbows from radiohead and paid 1 gbp for 10 songs. listening to the album right now for the first time and is cool. rather dark, but cool. technorati tags: music, mp3, shopping, free, radiohead, oasis, madonna, nin, jamiroquai, itunes

gmail and google apps space limits increased (but not mine!)
ever since i read that google will increase the size of gmail and google apps mail box sizes i have been impatient. it's not that i have filled my account (my secret: immediately delete those .ppt jokes and video attachments!), it's just that i like free stuff. and lots of it. :) roy says his (premium) account has been updated, but mine is not yet. how is your account doing? technorati tags: email, google, gmail, google apps, free

godaddy promo codes
here is a tip for all domain owners... when you register or renew internet domains you should do some research first. you can probably get a better deal. i'm using godaddy for a while now and i'm quite happy with it. their prices are already low, but you can get extra discount with "promo codes". so far i have used "blaugh" code which gives you 10% any purchase. this is the code from a cool blaugh web comic that looks defunct now so i took few minutes and some other codes you might want to check out on your next purchase. codes that worked for me so far: blaugh - save 10% on any order. chill1 - save 10% on any order. you can find more codes here: http://godaddycoupon.blogspot.com/2007/09/latest-godaddy-discount-coupons.html#comments http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=725207&start=80 http://www.anjibee.com/godaddy-promo-codes/ if you know some codes, post them in the comments! technorati tags: discount, domains, money

what's new in visual studio 2008 beta 2 from busy developer's perspective
so i finally installed visual studio 2008 (orcas) beta 2 on my work machine. let's see from the perspective of a busy developer what's new and what's cool. and what is not.
c# 3.0
there are some sweet additions to c# language in c# 3.0 you can start using right away. those are specially auto-implemented properties, object and collection initializers which will simplify your code.
i'll not bother about rewriting about new features c# 3.0, since much smarter people than me already did, so just check, for example, excellent articles by scottgu:
automatic properties, object initializers, and collection initializers
extension methods
lambda expressions
query syntax
anonymous types
bottom line is - c# has few new features, most of them are there because of linq (see below). other are quite simple, so you'll pick them up in 10 minutes flat.
or you could check cool stuff others are doing with new syntax.
linq
probably single most important addition to vs2008/c# 3.0/.net framework 3.5 is language integrated query - linq. linq is a general addition to the language, but you'll probably be most interested in linq to sql which let's you use linq to query database server without directly writing sql code.
i recommend reading most excellent tutorials from scottgu to get up to speed on linq to sql when you are ready to dive in and not sooner:
introduction to linq to sql
defining our data model classes
querying our database
updating our database
binding ui using the asp:linqdatasource control
retrieving data using stored procedures
updating our database using stored procedures
executing custom sql expressions
using a custom linq expression with the <asp:linqdatasource> control
all in all i think linq to sql is a sweet o/r mapper. no doubt there are better performing mappers out there, but linq to sql will be on every developers machine and will be a first step in o/r mapping for many.
it's fun and not too hard to start with, so i recommend you use it your next mini/pet/internal project.
asp.net
i don't work much with asp.net these days, but i did take a look anyway.
it seems to be a decent step forward, but no ground braking changes as in asp.net to asp.net 2.0 transition.
there is new design time experience with a split view like in dreamweaver and automatic css editing mode which i didn't like at first, but maybe i did something wrong.
asp.net ajax and web projects are now built in, there is a new liveview control, linqdatasource is a bridge to linq for asp.net datasources.
there is also new aspnet_merge utility to merge multiple assemblies for production use. this seems like a easy enough trick to squeeze some extra performance from your code.
vs 2005 projects in vs 2008
i recompiled some of our current vs2005 projects and it went pretty smooth.
vs2008 will show you import solution wizard when you try to open vs2005 solution for the first time. unfortunately, you can't open updated .sln files in visual studio 2005 although there are no big changes in format. but since .csproj (and probably .vbproj, i didn't check) files are compatible, you can easily have two .sln files - one for vs2005 and vs2008 and work on the same project in both.
vs2008 has a feature called multi targeting. when you import vs2005 project, vs2008 will still target .net framework 2.0, so you don't have to worry about missing dependencies on production machines. when you decide you need new feature from framework 3.0 and/or 3.5 you can change the setting.
be sure to have your projects on source control so you can check for changes to the code after import. you'll probably have some things to revert like changes in web service proxies like i did.
add-ins
i have used resharper so much, i really cannot code without it. unfortunately r# 3.0.2 doesn't support any c# 3.0 features yet, so you'll see lots of errors if you use them, but the code will compile. so r# is useless for testing out new language features and linq, but it will work ok if you'll be working in 2.0 style.
i have tested visualsvn 1.2.4 and it just works.
testdriven.net also work from the box.
visual studio 2008 and vista
visual studio 2008 work ok in vista. if you want to do asp.net stuff you still have to install iis6 stuff and run as administrator.
read more about it at arian's post working with iis under vs 2008 beta 2 and vista which covers everything you need to do.
other stuff you might want to know
vs2008 beta 2 has a go-live licence.
vs2008 is scheduled to launch in february 28th 2008, but msdn subscribers will probably get it month or two earlier.
you can import all your setting from vs2005 to vs2008 during install (or is it first start, i can't remember). those include keyboard shortcuts, colors, fonts and other stuff. you must reinstall add-ins.
conclusion
vs2008 feels much like 2005. if you don't want to, there is no need to use any new stuff. which is good so we can all transition slowly and learn about new stuff as we go along doing our daily developing.
the step from visual studio 2005 to visual studio 2008 is smaller / easier / less scary that then one from vs 2003 to vs 2005, so don't be afraid. download free visual studio 2008 beta 2 from microsoft page, install it and give it a go! if you don't want to mess with your main developer machine, you can get pre-installed vpc images on the same page.
i use vs2008 for all mini projects, testing and concept proofing now. i enjoy discovering new things that i don't know about and haven't read about. like enhanced error report with call stack when designer fails to load windows form.

"links of the week" are out of beta!
since "links of the week" posts were well accepted i decided i'll make them permanent feature of this blog. and since low is here to stay, i created a new category. if you want you can subscribe just to "links of the week" and stay away from other posts. i have to say it bring some order in my blog writing and reading world and that is a positive thing. here is why low is good for me: i'm forced to "clean up" in google reader and feeddemon. it forced me to optimize my reading habits and clean up subscriptions. i also find it very useful to write weekly review so i remember i found something cool during and i forgot /didn't have time / did bother to try it out. before writing wol i tend to do that. it's not that i have something better to do on sunday evening. technorati tags: beta, low, blogging

links of the week #6 (week 40/07)
stuff if bookmarked this week. in previous episode: links of the week #5 (week 39/07) .net scottgu: releasing the source code for the .net framework libraries, frans bouma: don't look at the sourcecode of .net licensed under the 'reference license', miguel de icaza: microsoft opens up the .net class libraries source code - if you live under the rock and you managed to miss news of the month, you should really read this three posts. free code translation for .net (c# & vb.net) - copy past c# <-> vb translation. old stuff, but i recommended it this week so i bookmarked it. development tools linqpad (via odetocode) - i'm planning to do some linq diving this week. sql command visualizer for visual studio 2005 - sweet idea. i don't think i'll remember to use it when the time comes, though. inconsolata - open source "rip" of my favorite monospaced font consolas. merge tracking - merge tracking is a big new feature of subversion 1.5. read, learn, try. it's going to rock. asp.net combine multiple stylesheets at runtime - mads kristensen of blogengine.net had great idea about merging .css files and he pulled it of. database db4objects - i played a bit with this java and .net open source object database engine and it feels right. it also has great documentation. if you are looking for some code to play with, this is it. software grepwin - if i need to search in files i usually use visual studio and do find in files. i'm still looking for a decent tool to do that. this is a new candidate. since it comes from the author(s) of tortoisesvn, i have high hopes for i. defraggler - freeware file (!, not disk) defragment tool from the people that brought you ccleaner and recuva. jkdefrag - no buttons, no menus freeware disk defragment tool. snadboy - reveal passwords behind password fields. you can also use spy++ or winspector too. web remember the milk - i heard/read it's better than todoist. homepage startup - i wrote an app like this not long ago, when i thumbnail homepage in opera. this one is one of many, but this one feels fast. (gcalcli) google calendar command line interface - ahhhhh... pure geekery. command line interface for web2.0 app. software doesn't get any better that this. linux flash-puppy - how to run puppy on any bootable usb storage media, such as flash memory. next chance for linux os is nearing. this is a candidate. diy the €2 laptop stand - this works great. i made a prototype and next time i'm in hardware store i'm picking up stuff to make it for real. updated software tomato firmware 1.09 - simple fix from 1.08, but i was still at 1.06. better check yours. wordpress 2.3 - you can do preflight check before you upgrade to check compatibility of plugins and themes. acdsee 10 - if you are still using it, that is. timesnapper 2.5 - password protected and encrypted snapshots. ghostdoc 2.1.1 [xplorer²] 1.7.0.5 recuva 1.06.132 - freeware undelete. technorati tags: development, asp.net, .net, software, database, web, linux, diy, low

notes and to-dos
i have been searching for a right solution for my note taking and to-do list management for a while. i'm not talk my business related tasks, those live in jira, i'm talking about my own day to day blogging/shopping/testing/installing/don't forget stuff. i have tried everything from microsoft outlook and microsoft onenote to various applications and web services like google notebook or backpack. i think i found a right combination at last... for to-do lists i use todoist. todoist typical slick web 2.0 app. what i like about it is it's speed and simplicity, google mail integration via firefox plugin and keyboard shortcuts. and price - it's free. for note taking i took a low tech road - i use notepad2 but with a twist - i made up a new file extension .note which i mapped to "configuration files" color scheme. so notepad2 thinks i'm editing and old school .ini file and if write title in square brackets it gets emphasized. i indent lines with a tab, so i can put different marks in front of the line, like x for done, ? for figure it out and so on. i can "comment out" a line with a semicolon sign in front. i constantly invent new rules in my head, but i think you get the point. of course, i sync notes across my computers with foldershare. technorati tags: notes, to-do, software, productivity

links of the week #5 (week 39/07)
cool links i read about this week, bookmarked and though someone else might find useful.
in previous episode: links of the week #4 (week 38/07)
development
optimize tortoisesvn - great idea to let tortoisesvn cache service operate only on folder that really contain code.
multi-targeting vs2005 and vs2008 web application projects, a gotcha! - i'm planning to start do real work in vs2008 and i might run into this issue.
sara ford's weblog - sara's blog is full of vs shortcuts. and they get more interesting by the day.
web development
typetester - test different fonts on the web. i miss vista/office2007 fonts in there, especially segoe ui which is used on codeplex for example.
sql server
xsql object search (via greg's cool [insert clever name] of the day) - search for sql objects.
blogs and blogging
a tool to manage your blog categories and technorati tags (via codeclimber) - i started tagging my post. this is a tool i might use to tag old ones.
a continuous learner's weblog, arjan's world (via secretgeek) - two candidates for replacing daily grind in my daily reading.
web
smplr - currently my homepage.
tools
system tray show and tell was a joy. these are some of new interesting finds:
clutter cloak - obstruct parts of screen for presentations.
minimizetotray - minimize firefox to tray.
peerguardian 2 - ip blocker.
powermenu - make any window minimize to tray, transparent and more.
taskbar shuffle - reorganize your taskbar buttons and tray icons.
games
game trailers, gamersyde, mass effect video - xbox 360 games are all the rage these days: halo3, mass effect, bioshock,... i'm not getting an xbox anytime soon but my coworker (heart surgeon in spare time) keeps me warm with trailers.
special halo 3 xbox super bundle signed by bill gates @ ebay - where will it stop in 4 days. currently at $8600.
local stuff
prihrani.si - merge your monthly bills. not working yet.
software updates
notepad++ 4.3
media player classic 6.4.9.1
cdburnerxp 4
foxit reader 2.2

how to do a quick search using google toolbar
this might be general knowledge, but i just discovered (guessed, actually) that if you want to search for a text on a web page, just select that text and drop it in search box of google toolbar. neat. works in ie and firefox. ps: if you try same trick on msn toolbar the text just sits in the search box but you have to click to actually search. technorati tags: firefox, google, toolbar, search, tip
